Ingredients & Supplement Facts

Ingredients Found in Nature

Serrapeptase

A potent proteolytic enzyme known as the “butterfly enzyme,” serrapeptase is a powerhouse with many therapeutic applications. It is perhaps most well-known for its ability to support the body’s inflammatory response. As one of the largest serrapeptase manufacturers in the world, we source our serrapeptase exclusively from our own large fermentation facilities.*

Papain

A proteolytic enzyme derived from the papaya plant. Highly effective, generally well-tolerated by humans and animals, and enormously versatile, Papain is known for the several types of proteases active in a wide range of conditions. Papaya leaves and fruit have a long history of medicinal use in Central America and the Caribbean.*

Bromelain

A proteolytic enzyme derived from the stem and fruit of pineapples. Pineapples have a long tradition as a medicinal plant among the natives of South and Central America. Bromelain is popularly used today for inflammation and fibrinolytic support.*

Amla

A nutrient-rich fruit native to India and Southeast Asia. Amla is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C, containing up to 600-700 mg per fruit, which is significantly more than oranges. Sour, bitter and astringent to taste, amla’s numerous health benefits are hard to get by directly eating the fruit. Instead, it is commonly consumed pickled, candied, juiced, or as a powdered extract (like that used in supplements). Amla has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to support immune, digestive, and skin and hair health.*

Rutin

A bioflavonoid commonly found in plants, fruits and vegetables. Bioflavonoids are ubiquitous in plants and commonly consumed in the human diet through fruits, vegetables and herbs. Flavonoids like rutin have various biological activities and potential health benefits, including antioxidant, inflammation, cardioprotective and neuroprotective support.*

Proteases

A class of enzymes that help break down proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. Proteases are found in humans, animals, plants and microbes. Peptides and amino acids play an essential role in tissue building, energy metabolism, immune function, and the synthesis of hormones and neurotransmitters, which influence mood regulation and cognitive functions.*

Lipase

A class of enzymes that help break down fats into fatty acids. Lipases are found in humans, animals, plants and microbes. The fatty acids produced by lipase are used for the body’s essential functions like energy, cell function, organ protection and nutrient absorption.*

Amylase

A class of enzymes that help break down fats into fatty acids. Lipases are found in humans, animals, plants A class of enzymes that help break down starches into simpler sugars, aiding digestion and immune health. Amylases are found in humans, animals, plants and microbes. Biofilms, the slimy protective homes produced by bacteria, can degrade with amylases, helping the body strip the bacteria of its protective armor and supporting the body’s natural immune response. The simpler sugars produced by amylase are used as a quick and efficient energy source for cellular functions. Glucose, one key byproduct of starch breakdown, is particularly crucial for brain function and physical activity.*

FAQs

What are systemic enzymes?

All life processes, such as digestion, breathing, even thinking, consist at least in part of a complex series of chemical reactions. Enzymes are the catalysts (the jump-starters) that make these chemical reactions possible. In fact, many of the body’s chemical reactions would never take place without enzyme catalysts.

Your body has a number of systems to manage itself: the immune system, the cardiovascular system, the skeletal system, the nervous system, the reproductive system, the digestive system and so on. Each system manages its own area and comprises of different muscles, organs, hormones, tissues, cells, fluids, glands, structures, etc.

When enzyme supplements are categorized as “systemic,” it means the enzymes are intended to affect systems beyond the digestive system in other parts of your body.

Why is it important to take systemic enzymes on an empty stomach?

Think of enzymes as super-efficient little workers with very specific jobs. Proteases are the protein specialists, lipases tackle fats, and amylases break down complex carbs. They’re even pickier than that – some only work on certain parts (specific bonds) within these molecules.

Here’s the thing: enzymes aren’t picky about where they do their job. If an enzyme finds something it can work on, it’ll go to town. So, if you take systemic enzymes with food, they’ll spend all their energy on your meal instead of doing their intended job elsewhere in your body.

That’s why we suggest taking systemic enzymes on an empty stomach.*

Why does Serrapeptase need a special delivery system that helps it resist stomach acid?

Some enzymes, like serrapeptase, are delicate and susceptible to the harsh acidic conditions of the stomach. Sending serrapeptase through the stomach can render it ineffective.

So, our researchers developed a cutting-edge delivery system to increase its efficacy: they applied a polymer called MAAC to the serrapeptase. MAAC is acid resistant, and helps protect our serrapeptase as it passes through the stomach acid. Once it reaches the basic conditions of the small intestine, the MAAC dissolves, delivering more active enzyme where it is most needed.*

Do you use phthalates in your special delivery system?

No! At AST Enzymes, we use Methacrylic Acid Copolymer (MAAC) for our acid-resistant polymer, which does not use or contain phthalates.

Wondering if MAAC is ok to put in your body? Don’t stress. MAAC is a phthalate-free, food-grade compound used for over 50 years and deemed safe by even the most strict food safety authorities.*

Are there any side effects?

Our enzymes are safe for human consumption and undergo rigorous regulatory review. Side effects are rare and typical only at the beginning of your systemic enzyme journey as you sort through what works for your body. Some people experience mild cramping, bloating or gas, and minor allergic reactions on the skin. We recommend you start low and go slow until a tolerance is established.

We also recommend you consult with your medical professional about starting systemic enzymes, particularly if you are on blood-thinning medications, or are pregnant or nursing.*

What if I miss a dose?

Regular, consistent use of systemic enzymes will provide the best results. But, if you do miss a dose, no biggie. Just remember to take your next regular dose.*
